On December 4, 2024, Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare since 2021, was fatally shot near the entrance of the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan, New York City. Thompson was in town to attend UnitedHealth Group’s annual investors meeting, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare. Authorities suspect the attack was targeted and are treating it as an assassination. Thompson had faced criticism for UnitedHealthcare’s denial of insurance claims, and his family revealed he had previously received threats.
Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old man was arrested as a suspect. Mangione was dining at a McDonald’s in Altoona when authorities, acting on a tip from the restaurant staff who identified him from NYPD-circulated photos, apprehended him.
The NYPD confirmed that the suspect had fled New York City, initially prompting a search in Atlanta, but he was ultimately captured in Altoona.
