On August 31, 2020, Ronnie McNutt initiated a live broadcast on Facebook. His friend, Joshua Steen, noticed the stream, initially not considering it unusual as McNutt had done similar live streams before. However, Steen became alarmed upon realizing that McNutt appeared intoxicated and was holding a rifle. Concerned, Steen tried to intervene multiple times, especially when McNutt accidentally fired the rifle. Steen hoped that Facebook would halt the stream to prevent others from seeing inside McNutt’s home while seeking police assistance. Despite the attempts, Facebook declined to end the broadcast, claiming it didn’t violate their platform rules.
During the live stream, McNutt received several phone calls, including one from his ex-girlfriend. Their conversation led to a brief argument before she hung up. Subsequently, McNutt addressed the viewers, stating, “Hey guys, I guess that’s it.” He then fatally shot himself under the chin while aiming the rifle at himself. Moments before the self-inflicted gunshot, a phone on his desk started ringing. Several users recorded the stream.
Though the New Albany Police Department had been alerted and arrived at the location during the live stream, they refrained from entering McNutt’s apartment until after the fatal shot was heard. Upon entering, they found his phone still ringing. Despite efforts to communicate through a speakerphone, there was no response from McNutt.
A post from Ronnie McNutt was later discovered on Facebook, encouraging people to convey care and love to someone in their life who needs reassurance. Two days after his death, McNutt was laid to rest in Snowdown Church of Christ Cemetery in Prentiss County, Mississippi.
