ALOR GAJAH – An 18-year-old teenage boy died after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a police four-wheeler conducting patrols to prevent illegal racing on Jalan Gangsa-Kesang Durian Tunggal in the early morning of the first day of Syawal yesterday.
In the incident at 2:56 a.m. on the first day of Eid, the victim, Mohammad Khairul Basahri, 18, was thrown several meters high before falling, based on several viral video clips since yesterday.
Based on the footage, the incident sparked public anger against the police officer involved, alleging that he deliberately hit the victim who was on the main road at the time.
Melaka Police Chief, Datuk Zainol Samah, said the victim was confirmed dead at 12:37 a.m. today while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Melaka Hospital due to serious internal injuries as well as broken legs and thighs.
“The investigation found that the incident occurred when a police vehicle driven by a 37-year-old male officer was on patrol duty to prevent illegal racing.
“The patrol was carried out following complaints from the public about many individuals gathering to participate in motorcycle racing activities and making noise at the Gangsa traffic lights,” he said in a statement today.
He added that upon arrival at the location, the vehicle turned on its beacon light and siren to inform the presence of the police, causing a group of motorcycle riders to flee from various directions.
“While attempting to turn right from Durian Tunggal to Gangsa, a Yamaha 135 LC motorcycle suddenly came from the opposite direction and collided head-on with the involved 4×4.
“This resulted in the victim suffering severe injuries to his legs and body before being rushed to the Red Zone of Melaka Hospital for further treatment,” he said.
