On August 16, 2023, a woman waving a gun in North Bellmore was struck by a police vehicle after firing shots into the air at an intersection. The officer used their car to knock her down, arrested her, and seized the gun.
Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder stated that the officer’s actions followed protocol for responding to deadly force. The woman, 33, suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized, while the officer also received medical treatment.
Police cleared the scene at 8 p.m. and continued investigating throughout the night. The motive behind the woman’s actions remains undisclosed.
