NAKHON PATHOM, October 21 (The Nation) — Two police officers were killed and five other people were wounded Monday when a parcel bomb exploded at a social security office east of the Thai capital, officials said. “A second policeman has died in hospital” from the blast, said a provincial police officer. According to Nakhon Pathom provincial police chief Pol Maj Gen Yuthana Thaipakdee, Sgt. Narong Chantanaso was killed when the package exploded as he was inspecting it at the local Social Security Office while awaiting the arrival of police bomb squad. The four other people injured in the blast included senior police official, Lt. Viset Pholyingcharoen, and a reporter. Police officials said the bomb sent to the government office in Nakhon Pathom, a central province west of the capital Bangkok, detonated as the suspicious package was being inspected. Three other officers were wounded along with two television reporters who were filming the scene. All were in a critical condition. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said the bomb was not linked to terrorism, and that an initial investigation indicated the culprit had a private grudge against an employee in the social security office. “It’s clear the bombing was criminal by nature. It was merely a common crime and the incident was not terrorism by nature,” Thaksin told reporters.
