SYDNEY – A tragic stabbing incident in a shopping mall on April 13, 2024, left six people dead and several others injured in Sydney, Australia. The attack, described by witnesses as chaotic, led to panic with many people hiding in shops to escape the violence.
According to New South Wales police commissioner Karen Webb, four women and a man died at the scene, while another woman succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Eight more people are receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack in Sydney hospitals. Among the injured is a nine-month-old baby who underwent surgery; however, the condition of the baby’s mother, who was also reported to be injured, remains unconfirmed.
The assailant, believed to be a 40-year-old man acting alone, was shot dead by a police inspector at the scene. Early investigations suggest the incident was not terror-related. The police officer who neutralized the attacker has been praised as a hero by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who acknowledged her bravery in saving lives during the rampage.
